DIFFICULTY: NOT THAT HARD, REALLY

intro …Brian is in the middle of spending a week alone at home, with only his Aunt around. His parents have gone to Ireland on a two-week trip and both his sister Kate and brother Timo are out of the house. Brian ends up spending most of his time with Callie, a girl he goes to school with and with whom he also shares some interests, including a love of cats. Brian wishes he had a cat but his parents won’t let him get one. Callie on the other hand has a cat named Squirrel, but her parents aren’t too fond of him, either.

She had been defending this cat and had been _____ for all the things he did. And instead of being helpful or _____ , Squirrel played right into Callie’s mother’s hands by proving that he couldn’t be trusted. I _____ away quietly, letting the screen door close behind me. As soon as I got home, I heard the phone ring. “I’ll _____ it,” I said before Aunt Speed could come to the phone. It was Callie. “Brian,” she said, “my mother already talked to my father on the phone. I know what’s going to happen. If I don’t find someone to take the cat, they’re going to call the vet and _____ him killed. I can’t let that happen. I suggested that we could take him out in the country instead and _____ him off. “Do you have any ideas?” — “Someone needs to take him in. Someone that I know will take good care of him. That’s all.” — “You mean me.” — “Why not? I saw him _____ the belly of this big dog once.” That didn’t sound very _____ to me. “I don’t mean he’d do that to Meeko. I’m sure he’ll get _____ ok with Meeko.”
